Ancestors

You can identify the pictures on either side of the woman in the middle as grandfather (right) and grandmother (left). That woman is great-grandmother (grandfather’s mother) who seems to be revered by the people still living there for her known sacrifice of enduring hardship when great-grandfather left for the Philippines and she was left in China. It is said that he never came back for his family despite having a son, which is why they don’t have his picture. Above great-grandmother’s picture are her parents, which makes them our great-great grandparents. The people there also speak highly of grandfather who followed his father to the Philippines but came back to China to find a wife, marry her in the village, and pay his respects before taking her back to live in the Philippines.
